Corporations started making the transition to environmental sustainability many years ago but the importance of it is more compelling than ever. For my current post I want to focus on oil companies. Think about the harm BP did to their reputation when they flooded the Gulf of Mexico with oil.  According to CNN, “A judge ruled BP was responsible for the release of 3.1 million barrels.” The long term impact of the spill is currently unknown. Now when a prospective customer sees this headline when they are looking up where to get their oil, is this good for the BP brand? No! Then it isn’t any surprise to anyone  when people balk when they hear the name BP.

Now on the other side of the coin you have Shell which is in the news for championing environmental sustainability with a recent event push. According to Inquirer.net, “The annual event is a reflection of Shell and its partners’ commitment, which includes Globe Business, the information and communication technology (ICT) arm of Globe Telecom, in fostering innovation and harnessing technology for environmental sustainability. Student teams were challenged to stretch the boundaries of fuel efficiency in a real-world urban environment, and winners were determined by the mileage achieved on a liter of fuel, rather than speed.” Which company do you think is doing better for their reputation? Shell of course, and this is where environmental sustainability comes into full effect. Making an effort to support the environment is good for business.

Now while we should definitely move away from oil, Shell is at least making an effort to help support the environment- and it is paying off. To simplify things, Shell is in the news for positive things while BP is still being exposed to bad PR. This is PR 101 – keep the public happy and don’t do anything to tarnish your reputation. To top everything off – Mark Wahlberg is making a movie about the oil spill disaster! And BP is still suffering 6 years later from bad PR. This is why companies need to value the environment and make a strong environmental sustainability effort!
